Apocalypse! The word fills imaginations with end-of-the-world scenarios—scary, horrific. Monsters violently destroy and use chaos to shove out order, truth, and caring as they destroy everything green and everything that was built to serve civilization. Some current books and movies dramatically tell how civilization ends in apocalypse.
Despite its 12,000-year story, today’s Civilization does not come with the guarantee of its survival. Creation does. Creation’s story predates modern civilization by millions of millennia and, despite Civilization’s attacks on her, Creation continues to generate resources that sustain Civilization.
There are moments that I throw up my hands at the endless work of dismantling walls of division. They seem to be built faster than what all the many powers working for unity can counter. But then I recenter myself and discover that the current wall-building frenzy of hate and exclusion stimulates me to relish the truth that the Divine Spirit called “Holy” or “Whole” is at work.
For too long I have given Spirit far less attention than she merits. Did you notice I said “she?” I’m not reaching over backward to include the feminine in “God.” The word Spirit is feminine in both Greek and Hebrew. So, referring to Spirit as “it” or “he” represses who she truly is and what she does. Once I saw that “Spirit” is feminine, my eyes lit up.
