… to hear her tell about the First International Conference on the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels known as the Santa Marta conference, held in Santa Marta, Colombia, from April 24–29, 2026. Co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands, representatives from 57 countries gathered, alongside indigenous peoples, trade unions, and NGOs, to focus on the “how” of phasing out coal, oil, and gas, rather than debating the necessity.

Samira Siddique is director of strategic initiatives at the Center for Earth Ethics. She has extensive experience in global climate change justice, spanning the politics of aid and development, climate displacement, and movement building around the spiritual, ethical and cultural dimensions of the climate crisis. She is an adjunct faculty member at Columbia Climate School.
The Center works to change the dominant value system from one based on short-term material gain to one based on the long-term health of the whole community of life, and
- addresses the moral and spiritual dimensions of the climate crisis.
- connects faith leaders within and across traditions to work on ecological issues,
- builds bridges between theological inquiry and the realms of policy, science and activism, and
- honors and uplifts those who do the work of reconnecting people to nature.
