Under the Jubilee tree, with Laura Stivers on “A Home for All”
Laura Stivers, professor of social ethics at Dominican University, San Rafael, California, told us story after story of communities successfully making their community healthier by helping everyone have a place called home.
Her book is A Home for All. It opens with a letter to her two twenty-something daughters to offer hope amid countless challenges.- We need an economics focused on relationships instead of the current capitalism that oppresses too many people and exploits to much of Earth.
- BlackRock is one of the biggest corporate owners of housing. Corporate owners often keep housing vacant because they see it as a commodity and do not focus on homes for people.
- Moms 4 Housing is a collective of unhoused and precariously housed moms in Oakland, CA, who fight against real estate speculation and advocate for housing as a human right.
- Owning land is a ridiculous concept. (Biblically, the earth is sacred and belongs to God.)
- In Miami, a group works to expunge evictions from the records of earnest people needing housing. 80% of evictions in Miami are from homes owned by corporations.
- The mortgage loan debacle by banks in 2008-2009 was the largest loss of equity by African-Americans in U.S. history.
