Today’s conversation Under the Jubilee Tree asks, Where do we bank?
Protests happen regularly outside of Citizens’ Bank because ICE banks there. Citizens’ does business in the northeastern U.S. Chase Bank, the largest in the U.S., makes fossil fuel and defense funding possible with massive loans. These are not good choices for where to keep our money.
We can do better. To find a local bank aligned with our values, check out a great website, Better Banking Options. Their lead question on their website says: You know that where you spend your money matters. But what about where you keep it before you spend it?
Jubilee Economics Ministries banks with Self-Help Credit Union because their local branch mission closely aligns with ours. They are located in San Diego’s most diverse neighborhood and emphasize meeting the financial needs of the people nearest them. They are an important player in strengthening the local economy.
Given that we can bank remotely now through internet transactions, if we have no good local options, find a credit union or bank that stays local on the Better Banking Options website.
Where do you bank? Let us know if you can sign onto this statement from our Jubilee Covenant:
_____I will use a local bank, credit union, or community development financial institution (cdfi) for my transactions.
