Under the Jubilee Tree, we talk about an ECONOMY FOR ALL.
Capitalism’s systems grasp us tightly in the U.S., affecting most everyone. In Mexico, thousands resist the grasp effectively. This gives space for our Jubilee Circles to create an economy that works for everyone, a solidarity economy. San Cristobal Jubilee Circle leads in this regard and we can all learn from what they do and teach.
The solidarity economy website tells us its scope and actions. It’s a great expression of Jubilee’s emphasis on an alternative economy.
The solidarity economy is a global movement to build a just and sustainable economy where we prioritize people and the planet over endless profit and growth. Growing out of social movements in Latin America and the Global South, the solidarity economy provides real alternatives to capitalism, where communities govern themselves through participatory democracy, cooperative and public ownership, and a culture of solidarity and respect for the earth.
Many of the people who lead Jubilee Circle activities could seek jobs in the capitalist system of Mexico but don’t. Some have great credentials and resumes but sense God’s call to work on activities aligned with the solidarity economy.
Take Alter-Nativas for example. Isai, Lindsey, and others, hold workshops on making homemade products instead of buying them commercially; also, on mushroom farming, which is good for soils, nutrition, and income. They oversee the regional use of the alternative currency, Tumín, which can be earned for work that pesos won’t pay for. They equal the peso in value. Isai is also one of San Cristobal’s best political artists. He serves many other groups working on justice in Mexico and recently in the U.S.
Your donations to Jubilee Economics Ministries support our work for a solidarity economy that works for all.
