Under the Jubilee Tree we help one another make decisions for alternative systems.
We hear it daily in the news. Food is taking a lot more out of our budgets than before tariffs and the Iran War. Farmers hurt because fertilizer and diesel have spiked—also due to the Strait of Hormuz debacle—plus unpredictable markets for their crops due to tariffs.
Consumers on lower incomes hurt badly. So do farmers, with many losing their farms. Both shout out that we need to switch to a more sustainable food system. In Jubilee, we advocate for that switch and name the Big Three choices we can make to empower the new food system we need. Earth needs it too.
Eat plant and low-meat diets. Most meat comes from confinement lots (“factory farms”) with their many downsides: extra antibiotics for the animals to prevent diseases in close quarters. The sludge lagoons from poop is toxic and adds health risks when used as manure on fields.- Eat organic. Organic and regenerative farming improve soils. They use little or no synthetic fertilizer with or without blockage in the Strait of Hormuz. Organic farmers don’t put toxins into the soil and the food produced is healthier.
- Eat local. Support local farmers, typically small farmers who aren’t farming to become rich but because they love to be close to the soil and a rural kind of living. The same is true for local fisherfolk. Shop at Farmers’ Markets regularly. Talk with the folks and get to know the struggles and joys of a different food system. Visit a farm. Little diesel is used, and nothing travels long distances to get to consumers.

Vote November 3 … or much earlier! And vote every day with your purchase $$. Affordability of food is on the ballot. So too our farming friends.
